What We Do

Picture
The Florida Planets Lab group at the University of Florida explores big picture questions about the formation and geologic evolution of the solar system's rocky planets

We use a combination of high-pressure and high-temperature experimental techniques, detailed studies of planetary samples, and non-traditional stable isotope geochemistry to explore how the terrestrial planets separated into a core, mantle, and crust, and how that differentiation event affected and dictated the next four and a half billion years of their geologic evolution

The  Florida Planets Lab is lead by Professor Stephen Elardo and is part of the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Florida. Our primary laboratory is the Experimental Geochemistry Lab, but we also work with a number of other research groups and labs both at UF and around the world.
